This week’s Motivation Mondays’ topic is ‘Community’ in anticipation of UN Day and the Make A Difference Day this Saturday, October 24. Millons of volunteers across the nation will join in with a common mission: to improve the lives of others.
“Without a sense of caring, there can be no sense of community.” Anthony J. D’Angelo
As I think about Community, I realize how dependent we are on each other. How every person has an interconnection with someone or someones, no matter who or where they are, nor what they are doing. We need one another, and they need us.
“We must become bigger than we have been: more courageous, greater in spirit, larger in outlook. We must become members of a new race, overcoming petty prejudice, owing our ultimate allegiance not to nations but to our fellow-men within the human community.” Haile Selassie
I wonder what a life would be like if we had no connections with others. What would we learn, what would we do, who would we be? For me, I need others. I need their ideas. I need their laughter. I need their disagreements. I need their support. I need their anger. I need their talents. I need their ignorance. I need their needs. Yes I need their needs because their needs offer me the opportunity to give. Whether we give a word, a hand, a gift, a laugh, a dollar, an applause, a song, a thought, we are made to give. That’s who we are. Giving is natural, and when we do not give, we are blocking a part of ourselves. We are cheating not only others, but also ourselves. Because in giving we recognize the gifts of receiving: love, thanks, gratitude, joy, and sometimes rejection.
“Without community service, we would not have a strong quality of life. It’s important to the person who serves as well as the recipient. It’s the way in which we ourselves grow and develop.” Dorothy Height
This Saturday is your chance to Make a Difference.
