A Good Life

Kathryn Stucker has contributed another delightful poem for today’s post. Makes you want to head to Arkansas, doesn’t it?

WE GOT

FLEAS ON THE DOG,

CHIGGERS IN THE GRASS,

HORNETS IN THE BARN, AND

TICKS GOD KNOWS WHERE;

BUT THERE’S

A SWIMMING HOLE NEAR,

GIANT OAKS IN THE YARD,

PINE TREES ON THE HILL, AND

WILD FLOWERS ABOUND.

WE GOT

WEEDS IN THE GARDEN,

ROCKS IN THE ROADWAY,

STICKINESS ALL SUMMER, AND

CLAMMINESS ALL WINTER;

BUT THERE’S

GOOD NEIGHBORS UPSTREAM,

CLOSE FRIENDS CROSS-RIVER,

FAMILY ON THE HOME-PLACE, AND

LONG-TIME TRADITIONS.

WE GOT

OUR TAXES TO PAY,

MORE ROADS TO FIX,

FOUR-PARTY LINES, AND

POLITICIANS;

BUT THERE’S

A CHURCH DOWN THE LANE,

A SCHOOL UP THE HILL,

OUR HOME’S IN THE COUNTRY, AND

IT’S A GOOD LIFE IN ARKANSAS.
