Fragile Beings

Why are our heroes such fragile beings?
I want my heroes to be strong and kind,
Honest and moral. Not just handsome
Or beautiful with more ego than sense.

Why are our heroes such fragile beings
With flaws of omission and commission?
Politics and business, religion and arts
Draw those with more ego than sense.

Why are our heroes such fragile beings?
Do they set high goals for themselves,
Or do we put them on those pedestals?
Power must need more ego than sense.

Why are our heroes such fragile beings?
Our historic heroes became almost gods,
Could do no wrong, but were human too.
We hope most had both ego and sense.

Why are our heroes such fragile beings?
Few are prepared for the spotlight
And we don’t know what we would do.
We’d hope to have less ego, more sense.

Why are our heroes such fragile beings?
Nothing prepares the poor for riches.
Nothing prepares the weak for power.
Little limits ego or grows good sense.

Why are our heroes such fragile beings?
I don’t want to know their foolish flaws,
Or hear lies and threats spread wide.
I just want a balance of ego and sense.

  1. Heroes with modesty rarely think of themselves as heroes. They are just doing their best with what they have. Those who have placed themselves on high are rarely my heroes.
