I recently watched a clip of one of the debates between Ms. Clinton and Mr. Trump where she stated he had paid no taxes for a number of years.
He quipped, “That makes me smart” (or something similar).
Three years later I want to respond. I’m aware this is late, but better late than…
Mr. Trump, since not paying taxes is smart, you are saying the milliions of Americans who pay their taxes are dumb.
That those of us who pay taxes to support our law enforcement officers, our military, our teachers, and pay for our highways, our bridges, our schools, our health care are dumb.
No, Mr. Trump. They aren’t dumb, they are Americans.
Not paying your share of taxes does not make you smart. It makes you selfish, Mr. Trump. You are dumping the financial obligation all Americans have onto the backs of hardworking taxpayers. They are carrying you so you can enjoy the benefits of their labor without having to pay for that labor.
Americans pay taxes so their children have playgrounds and schools. You use your tax savings to send your children to private schools and country club playgrounds.
Americans pay taxes so law enforcement officers, first responders, and our military forces are paid while they protect us. You use their services, but don’t help pay their salaries.
Americans pay taxes so our highways, waterways, airways, bridges and other infrastructure facilities are safe and usable. You use those same facilities without contributing to their upkeep.
Americans pay their fair share and are proud to contribute to the well-being of others. You don’t pay your fair share, and you are proud to take advantage of those taxpaying Americans.
You, Mr. Trump, are not smart, you are selfish, and as an American taxpayer, I doubt your ‘Americanness’.
Yep, guess I needed to get this off my chest.

I guess you have a point…… same situation over this side of the pond. If you loaded, you can keep it. Doesn’t do much to promote honesty and integrity (particularly in Public Office). So I guess we all knew about Trump, and from his stance on so many issues, it was just par for the course….. trouble is he ain’t the only one.

Very well said Margo.
I doubt if anyone in Public Office would do the same over here. There is far too much scrutiny these days. I don’t doubt for a moment that accountants are employed to ensure they pay less than they should, but that is par for the course for anyone self employed, no matter what their social status, everyone attempts to pay less.

Yes, and I understand that desire to pay less. But to take deductions that are questionable and ignore your duty as a citizen and then to become the leader is a terrible precedent.

I so agree. It’s outrageous!

Well said Margo. It needs to be said loud, and often.

I agree. I am happy to pay my share. Yes we have an accountant who does his job and finds (or did in the past, nothing much to find now) deductions, but I’m never upset that we have to pay. In fact I vote for increasing millage regularly so that our schools can improve. And I don’t even have kids.
Our president is a fraud. He doesn’t pay bills he owes. He doesn’t pay employees and contractors that he owes. He doesn’t pay taxes that he owes. He doesn’t carry his share and he has no empathy for anyone else.
We need to make sure he is not reelected. I don’t know how to get through an additional 4 years of constant turmoil and deceit.

Changing President’s in the 2020 election is a MUST. I have hopeful days, and then am afraid of the damage he is doing and will do in the next 18 months.
