A Credit Card Christmas

I expected activities to slow down this Christmas because of the pandemic, but think again.

I noticed the frantic internal rush to spend money began around mid-November, and it reached a boiling point hours before Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Cyber Monday…and it hasn’t let up. The breaking of Hoover Dam would be comparable to this adrenalin cascade that is drowning me in the seductive lure of emptying my bank account.

Perhaps I have been isolated too long, unmotivated to wear anything more than 5-year-old shorts and a faded t-shirt, and that’s on the days when I get out of my pajamas. I am now dreaming of a new pair of jeans, although I have several pair with tags hanging off the belt loops. I ask myself how many more sweat shirts do I need, over and above the 12 currently crowding my t-shirt collection? 

The epitome of my desire to buy is when I peruse kitchen gadgets on my computer. I haven’t made a trek into my kitchen since 1983, so how would I know what I need in my pantry or silverware drawer?

But the itch is strong. I’m eager to pull out my credit card and see where I can use it even on things I don’t need, or in a more rational frame of mind, would ever want. 

Marketing experts have been hard at work the past 9 months dreaming up teasers that will entice me to beg a company to take my credit card number. This is indeed a dangerous time to turn on my computer. The ads are attractive, inviting, insistent, beguiling…am I talking about a Target blanket or a desirable date? My gosh, one would think I’ve gone nuts with a lust for spending.

Some people are into food to satisfy the Covid-19 doldrums. For me food doesn’t do it, but give me online catalogs of useless items and I can look for hours. 

There are added challenges when living in Mexico and not knowing the language: one can’t use the ‘search’ function because it won’t take words in English. Say you would like to see what is available in gloves…good luck. How do I know the words in Spanish for women’s gloves are ‘guants de mujer’‘? It is time consuming to look up every word when attempting to find specific items. I just hope there are pictures so at least I know what department I may be in.

All in all, the pace of activity this Christmas season seems to be moving at the same speed as previous years: hectic, busy and frantic. But hey, I’m staying isolated: just me, my computer and my credit card.

  2. I’m working really hard to keep my internet shopping down to “necessary” things. It’s the definition of “necessary” that creates problems for me. But – the upside is I am assuring the UPS driver of continued employment.
