The Burden

Blocking the sunlight

It moves slowly, quietly

Knowing its place

Claiming it with each tick of the clock.

Not marching, but steadfast

Untiring, constant

Bringing relief to some,

Fear, or tranquility to others.

Darkness is its playground

Allowing stars to tickle the sky

Dreams to dance and come alive.

Crickets to sing, fireflies to dart.

It comes unannounced and retreats silently

Its blackness fading before the sun’s fiery face

Stars are dismissed, dreams replaced with reality

The brightness washing away obscurity.

But it will return with its promises

Of solace, rest, aggravation or dread

This mixed complexity is the burden of Night.
